Pho-Nominal!

Residents of Columbia Heights are all a-Twitter(literally) about their new pho restaurant, Pho 14, on 14th and Park. It's true that the pho- genre, a hearty Vietnamese beef noodle soup, is severely underrepresented in DC, but don't forget that you can get this tasty concotion right here on the Hill. So if you don't want to trudge into NW, stop by Pacific Cafe on 11th and Pensylvannia for a steaming bowl of pho!

Fyi, the owners of Pacific Cafe have opened a creperie and coffee shop right next door. Stay tuned for more info

Computer Corner --> Community Center

Sad news with a silver lining: The Capitol Hill Computer Corner, the space on the corner of 15th and D St SE, is no longer in business. Due to loss of funding, the non-profit organization that offered internet access and technology training at different levels to serve elementary-aged children, senior citizens, has been forced to close. BUT, in its place a new Capitol Hill Community Center has evolved. Stay tuned for more information regarding this, but plans for the Center sound promising including art classes, poetry readings, exercise classes, after-school tutoring and much more.

If anyone has more information regarding this, please contact lowercasehill@gmail.com

Springtime: A Petite Pictorial

Though it has been gloomy these last few days, we did get a beautiful taste of spring before that. To remind you of those happier times:

An Ode to the Bread Basket at Le Pain Quotidien

Le Pain Quotidien bread basket.
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
On Sunday mornings, when my head is aching
and my stomach is grumbling from a night a'town,
you fill me up with your brilliant sustenance.
First white, then wheat, both short and long,
you surprise me with your morsels of dates and nuts.
I love thee freely, because I know not your calories.
I love thee immediately, because you come so quickly.
But most of all, I love thee for your delicious jars
of apricot and currant and hazelnut spreads.
I could bathe in that brunette hazelnut concoction.
I love thee with bated breath,
so short from my mouth stuffed with bread.

Gone to the Dogs

Portuguese water dogs are getting all the attention these days with President Obama's new first pooch, Bo, arriving at the White House this week. Hill residents are definitely dog fans as evidenced by the scads of dogs and their owners roaming through Lincoln Park on weekends, but do people really love Portuguese Water Dogs that much???

According to the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, PWD's are hypoallergenic, rarely shed and are excellent with children. I also heard that they can balance the budget, turn water into wine and make pigs fly.

But really, what dog breed do you think is best for DC living?

Go Get Some Wisdom

Attention to all those in need of a stiff absinthe cocktail after work:

Wisdom, a new bar near the Potomac Avenue metro, is serving up a unique brand of art inspired cocktails and potent absinthe spirits. The decor is spartan but chic in what could only be termed as "a hip fall out shelter" complete with unicorn tapestries. It's a great bar for a casual date or a relaxed spot to hang with friends.

Started by a native New Yorker in October, Wisdom is surprising unpretentious and inviting. The perfect addition to the southern end of the hill.
